Bandar Seri Begawan - Gym-goers still maintain their exercise regime regularly and are unperturbed by the outbreak of the Influenza A (HIND virus in the country, stating that their healthy activities make them less vulnerable to the virus than those who do not exercise regularly.
"Exercising has improved my health," said Diyana Alipah, a constant Fitness Zone gym-goer. "It has definitely reduced my visits to the doctor."
Despite having been warned to avoid crowded places, the 17-year-old student said that there is no need for her to fear the pandemic because her health state is in "tip-top condition".
"You cannot avoid everything. What I will have to do is to have trust in God," said a 63-year-old who wished to be known as Margaret. Having participated in gym activities for over two years, the housewife stated that she is now free from her old chronic symptoms such as frequent headaches, fever and flu.
Apart from going to the doctor's to check my blood pressure, I did not require any other treatment," she added.
Fitness Zone personal trainer Nurul Bazilah Hj Mohd Tarsat said that one's immune system depends on how active the person is.
"There are plenty of toxins in the body. If you are active, you tend to sweat a lot and this is a way for toxins to be released," she said.
As "all the gym-goers are active", the 20-year-old trainer mentioned that she has no worries working with the crowd despite the virus.
"People who exercise regularly generally have stronger and healthier bodies, which in turn make them more resistant towards diseases," said Rose Lynn Pradel, a fitness instructor.
Although gym-users are generally safe from various diseases, David Sesis, 32, said that precautions should still be heeded to avoid from being infected with the HIN1 virus.
"The management has instructed gym-users to use their own set of towels as a precautionary method to avoid spreading the virus by contact," added the Fitness Zone dance trainer.
Fionnah Louis, 27, however, expressed that she is still worried about the pandemic although she still pays frequent visits to the local gym. "I still need exercise no matter what," said the hairstylist.
She suggested that gyms should provide hand sanitisers and make it compulsory for everyone to use it before entering the common area as a preventive measure.
"Gym equipments are always sanitised after use, which makes the gym a clean and safe environment for people to workout," said Dolex Dante, Fitness Zone membership consultant, adding that he will, however, bring the suggestion of introducing hand sanitisers to the attention of the gym manager.
