Wu Chun in ‘14 Blades’
Say his name and legions of girls will swoon. After all, Brunei-born heart-throb Wu Chun,,famed for being one -quarter of the taiwanese boyband ‘Fahrenheit’, has a gorgeous face and sculpted muscles.
Although he shot to fame in the 2007 Taiwanese idol drama ‘Romantic Princess’, the actor’s pet peeve is being associated with the prince-like charaters that he often plays.
Wu Chun,30, told First over the phone from Beijing: “Currently, I want to show people the different sides of myself. In 14 blades, I got a chance to portray a manly character.
“the reality is I’m more of sporty, thrill-seeker type pf person than a genteel prince charming.”
The role he wants to try most is that of a bodyguard, reminiscent of Kevin Costner’s character in the Hollywood film ‘The bodyguard’, who is assigned to protect a female celebrity (Whitney Houston).
Hong Kong superstar Sammi Cheng is Wu Chun’s ideal choice to play the celebrity in the movie.
In 14 Blades, however, Wu Chun was stoked when his idol Donnie complimented him on his martial arts prowess.
Donnie’s advice to him? Let go and just fight. Wu Chun – who performed all his own stunts – heeded it, but he ended up with injuries he suffered on the set.
He sustained many cuts from the sharp, curved sword used by his character, the “Judge of the desert”. Once, a bomb exploded five seconds too fast, causing it to blow up near his face.
For 30 seconds, he couldn’t open his eyes and teared continuously, fearing that he had lost his sight.
“I wasn’t afraid that I would lose my looks. I like looking at thing so I was very concerned about my eyes.
“I don’t know if my company bought insurance for me but I should have bought some for myself,”he joked.
But what has caused controversy are the similarities that moviegoers have drawn between his character and Pirates Of The Caribbean’s Jack Sparrow – especially in the imaging.
Wu Chun admitted that did see some resemblance between the two swashbuckling adventurers but said that 14 Blades’ Hong Kong director Daniel Lee drew his inspiration from the Indian and Arabic books.
One major difference between them, however, is that the judge’s costume shows off Wu Chun’s eight pack.
Daniel told first in a separate interview when he was in town: “I cast Wu Chun because he’s got a great work ethic, and of course his good physique suits his character who is supposed to look Mongolian.
“In one scene, there’s a close-up of his abs when he gets slashed on his stomach. But when he uses a strip of cloth to bandage the wound and carries on fighting, that’s actually drawing from an old saying that a fearless man fights on even when their insides are showing”.
Wu Chun added that since the Judge grew up in the desert, he would “naturally” wear less clothing.
But the price to pay for muscular frame?
It not long hours spent training at the gym or practicing martial arts. It’s having to endure being “pawed” by overzealous fans.
Wu Chan recounted how fans would touch his arms and brush his derriere in crowded places, all of which he say he takes in good spirit.
The only girl he would beat up-on screen of corse- is ex-Miss Hong Kong Kate Tsui, whom he goes up against in an exciting showdown.
Said Wu Chun “With a girl, you will definitely be more careful in a fight scene as opposed to sparring with a guy (like Donnie)”.
