Bandar Seri Begawan - On behalf of the Philippines government, Nestor Z Ochoa, the Philippines Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam expressed his gratitude to the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for establishing the Humanitarian Fund for the Victims of Typhoon Sendong or Washi in the Philippines.
The Philippines Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam was speaking at the Les Mills Charity Marathon event yesterday held at the National Hockey Field to raise fund for the survivors of the Sendong Typhoon tragedy in the Philippines.
He also said, "This initiative shows the close bond between both countries and the readiness of the people of Brunei to help the Filipinos who have lost their loved ones, home, livelihood as well as their sense of hope."
Recalling the disaster, he said, "Typhoon Sendong rode the path of death and destruction for almost 1.2 million people, claiming the lives of 12,000 people, injuring 6,000 people as well as putting 31,000 people in evacuation centres.
"The initial death toll did not include the victims of Leptospirosis, a virus spreading through the urine of infected animal, usually associated with the exposure of flash flood water," he added.
"The typhoon caused damages amounting to 1.7 billion peso or almost B$52 million to the infrastructure and agriculture farms. The Philippines government has been focusing on its emergency response by providing food and relief items to the survivors."
He also said, "We are thankful to foreign countries, the UN agencies and international NGOs.
Countries like Brunei, Switzerland, Spain, Indonesia, Japan, Ireland, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Italy as well as UN agencies and international NGOs such as World Health Organisation, World Food Programme, UNICEF, UN High Commissioner of Refugees, UN International for Migration and Protection Mechanism, Asean Disaster Preparedness Centre, EU, Taiwan Chamber of Commerce, Japan International Cooperation Agency and Korea International Cooperation Agency have helped alleviate our hardship when the tragedy struck."
Challenges remaining on the ground, he outlined, are "partial restoration of water and lights in affected areas, scarcity of drinking water, food, shelter and non-food items, management of reliefs goods, difficulty in sorting relief goods, the needs of establishing the relief distribution system and logistical mobiliation".
However, he also said, "I am confident that with the support of the fellow Filipinos and members of the international community, our countrymen will recover from the disaster."
More than 200 people turned out for the event, organised by Wu Chun, the owner of Fitness Zone, who described it as getting fit and healthy for a good cause.
Also present at the event were Mohammad Reza Havaseli Ashtiani, Iranian Ambassador to Brunei as well as staff from various embassies.
In an interview with Wu Chun, he said, "We want people to get fit and practise a healthy lifestyle and at the same time promote a good cause.
So we approached the Philippines Embassy to come up with a fundraising event for the victims of the typhoons."
He added, "Fitness Zone also has a promotion for members and the fee will be donated to the fund.
A number of merchandise is also sold to help raise funds."
Les Mills Charity Marathon is part of a series of events organised with Prismworks Event Management to raise fund for survivors of the Typhoon Sendong Tragedy in the Philippines.
According to Jeffrey Cadayong of Prismworks, other upcoming events are Charity Golf on February 25 and 26 at the RBGCC and a Charity Dinner will be held at the end of February at The Centrepoint Ballroom.
