Chinese tourists touching down in the Sultanate are set to increase by 30 per cent this year, breaking the mark of 40,000 people.

This was revealed by Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamed, the Chief Executive Officer of Brunei Tourism, yesterday in an interview during the arrival of international magazine Men's Health personnel from China who will be doing features about Brunei and shooting Wu Chun as the front cover of the magazine.

Speaking to the media, Sheikh Jamaluddin said, "Outside of Asean, China is the No 1 market for Brunei. We are happy with our appointed marketing representative Beijing Longway International Travel Services who has done a good job.

"Last year we achieved 26 per cent growth and this year, they have promised that we will achieve 30 per cent growth."

In figures, he said, "Some 30,000 Chinese tourists came last year and we feel that it will break the 40,000-mark this year."

According to Sheikh Jamaluddin, China is a growing market and its people are big spenders.

"We welcome them here in Brunei. With Chinese tour operators and good Chinese cuisine, the tourists feel right at home in Brunei.

"Two of the attractions that the Chinese tourists are fascinated about are Brunei's Royal Heritage and The Empire Hotel."

The Chief Executive Officer of Brunei Tourism also mentioned that most road shows that Brunei Tourism has done worldwide were in China whereby each year, a total of five roadshows are organised.

Touching of Wu Chun becoming Brunei's Tourism Ambassador, Sheikh Jamaluddin said, Wu Chun is a well known figure in the world and we have approached him on the matter.

However he has to wait until his contract in Taiwan expires this July before making any concrete decision. We hope that he will be able to negotiate a new contract which will allow him to be Brunei's Tourism Ambassador," Wu Chun in a separate interview said,

"The arrival of the internationally known magazine Men's Health that has a very strong circulation in China will definitely help promote Brunei as a tourist destination to the China market.

"It's the first time that an international magazine is doing some photo shooting in the country. The magazine that features Brunei and myself will be released in China within this year," he added.

Brunei Tourism Board has sponsored the flight and accommodation for the crew of the Men's Health magazine as part of its promotional efforts.
