IN A battle against the bulge, the Ministry of Health will be working with Fitness Zone to come up with an initiative similar to the successful show “Biggest Loser” to encourage Bruneians to lose excess weight and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Details of the initiative have yet to be worked out by the Ministry of Health which will be working with Fitness Zone to kick start the project. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed this year between both parties.

The newest initiative – a private and public partnership – in the fight against obesity was revealed by Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Md Yusof, the Minister of Health, and Wu Chun, Director of Fitness Zone, at the opening of Fitness Zone’s new wing, an extension to the current Kiulap Branch.

The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Health with Wu Chun and Pehin Kapitan Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awg Goh King Chin. Present to witness the event were Wu Chun’s fans from overseas.

The new extension covers an area of 6,000 sq feet and is equipped with state-of-the-art fitness equipment from Italy, the official equipment for the 2012 Olympic Games. The new area also has a boxing ring for sparring.

The Minister of Health welcomed the new initiative of Fitness Zone. “The new extension is in support of the Ministry of Health’s vision towards a healthy nation. Members of the public can benefit from the systematic training and professional instructors available in Fitness Zone.”

The Minister of Health, who is himself a Fitness Zone member, became a lifetime member after Wu Chun presented the minister with the lifetime membership as a token of appreciation.

Currently, there are more than 4,000 active members in Fitness Zone and the new wing will serve to accommodate even more members.

However, Wu Chun expressed his disappointment as according to past accumulated records, there were more than 9,000 people who had signed up with Fitness Zone over 10 years, but many gave up after two or three months. Therefore to further attract more interest in working out, Wu Chun revealed that Fitness Zone plans to come out with fun fitness so that the participants will not feel any pain.

The Minister of Health shared a similar sentiment with Wu Chun and added, “It is important to stay dedicated and committed in order to stay healthy.”

Wu Chun during his speech before the official launch said, “It’s still unbelievable that FZ has been around for 10 years! I have mixed emotions inside me right now.”

He recalled, “I started Fitness Zone in 2003 with a simple vision – to inspire all Bruneians to the world of fitness, both for themselves and for their loved ones.

“Working in the fitness industry for such a long time is not easy at all, especially in Brunei. It takes sacrifice, it takes time, it requires dedication, it requires very strong willpower. But when we gain the strength and courage to endure a difficult 10 years, it’s worth it,” he added.
