THE ongoing negotiation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) that includes Brunei Darussalam and the United States is set to further raise the level of protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in the Sultanate as the multilateral free trade agreement stresses the ambitious steps that are taken for protection of Intellectual Property Rights.

This was stated by Daniel Shields, the US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam during the special screening of the latest Hollywood blockbuster ‘Man of Steel’ in conjunction with the theme ‘Creative Industries and Intellectual Property Rights’, at Times Cineplex, Berakas.

Although numerous achievements have been made, the US Ambassador noted that there is still more that can be done in the future.


He said, “I think that the ongoing negotiation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is very ambitious in term of the steps taken for protecting IPR. If the negotiation is successfully done, we will only have to make adjustments to accommodate the legal system as well as the enforcement mechanism to further increase the level of protection of IPR.”

He added, “This is not only a job for Brunei but for all of us. TPP has a strong protection of Intellectual Property Rights as we goes down the road. We will keep raising the level.

“US and Brunei Darussalam as well as countries globally have a big stake in strong protection of IPR to build on a vibrant creative industry.”

He added, “The Government of Brunei Darussalam has made fantastic progress in the field of IPR protection which will create a great environment for young people in the country to craft their own future in the creative industry.”

Regarding the transfer of the registry of trademark to the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) beginning this month, he commented, “It’s a great step and another indication that Brunei is thinking very systematically and strategically in promoting IPR protection. The Attorney General’s Chambers and BEDB have played a tremendous role in the progress.”

In terms of cooperation between Brunei and US in the protection of IPR, he said, “Everyone has to work together to protect Intellectual Property Rights. If the US has any good training on Intellectual Property opportunities, we will share with Brunei and other countries.”

He further iterated, “Pirates are people who are not interested in protecting Intellectual Property and they are thinking internationally. Therefore governments and citizens of countries like US and Brunei also need to work together to make sure that the artists who create the Intellectual Property get the benefits.”
