Brunei-born internationally acclaimed actor, Wu Chun yesterday paid tribute to his late mother by providing assistance to the underprivileged.
Today marks the 11th anniversary since Wu Chun’s mother passed away and the caring and compassionate Wu Chun – being deeply influenced by his mother’s charitable passion – honoured her with his own charity drive.
The first home he visited belonged to Dayang Hanidah binti Abdul Hamid, who is currently going through a divorce and is without a stable income, and her daughter who has just completed Year 11 and is looking to further her studies.
Living in a substandard condition in Kampong Kapok where the roof is constantly leaking during rain, Wu Chun has promised to help fix the roof of the house. In addition, the megastar also handed out household items and a sofa to Dayang Hanidah.
Dayang Hanidah was without work for two months and recently had an operation at RIPAS Hospital. Without any income, she didn’t get a chance to celebrate Hari Raya this year. She also claimed that she did not receive any assistance from relevant authorities.
When interviewed, she conveyed her thanks and heartfelt appreciation to Wu Chun for the contributions.
The next home Wu Chun visited was at Hj Khairzzaman bin Hj Ismail’s in Perpindahan Meragang where a 74-year-old senior citizen, Dayang Tunang binti Untong is staying.
Dayang Tunang, who has never married and had no one to take care of her, was taken in by Hj Khairzzaman and family. She currently stays in a room which used to be the family’s dining area.
Hj Khairzzaman hopes that relevant authorities can help contribute to the 74-year-old’s welfare.
After contributing the daily necessities, Wu Chun took time to sit down and chat with Dayang Tunang and found that she was in high spirit.
In an interview with the Bulletin, Wu Chun explained “the reason I am doing this today is because of the 11th anniversary of my mum’s passing away. Last year, I paid a visit and donated to Yaska – Children’s cancer unit. This year I plan to do something different because my mum has given her all to make sure that we have a great home. That’s the reason I wanted to help the less fortunate and create awareness so society knows what is happening and can help offer a helping hand whenever there is a chance.”
He added, “Whatever the mission is, one common goal is that we will – in one way or another – leave footprints in others’ lives. What we do will impact not only our families and friends but also people from all walks of life, including those who you don’t personally know and mother nature as well.”
Charity, he said, “has been a main theme in my life. Looking back, I think my charity mission all started with my mum who had influenced me so deeply since I was young. She has really been a good role model to me in many ways and in particular, reaching out to give a helping hand to others whenever we can. She indeed has demonstrated fully what the saying ‘actions speak louder than words’ meant throughout her life. As a result, I was raised with the clear awareness that I should always be grateful for all things in life and be active in helping others whenever the opportunities arise”.
