BRUNEIAN celebrity Wu Chun (Goh Kiat Chun) is back in the country and took the time out of his busy schedule to share his experiences and insights on his latest movie, "14 Blades", the biggest of his career, and his plans for 2010 with The Brunei Times.

Usually surrounded by screaming fans (even in Brunei), Wu sat at his quiet office in Fitness Zone Kiulap, casually dressed in his gym's polo-tee shirt and jeans, he looked slightly tired but with a hint of relief to have some quiet time in Brunei.

"I am feeling a little exhausted after travelling for the most part of this year and further down 2010 will be an extremely busy year for me," he said.

Seen widely as a philanthropist, he first addressed his plans in which he would like to be more active this year in charity projects and to have movie sessions where ticket sales can be donated to organisations in Brunei.

"I have thought about it a lot (charity) even in conjunction with the premiere but I arrived back in Brunei a bit after it (14 Blades) was launched ... so maybe, after the Chinese New Year holidays we can do something."

"I want to discuss with the details with local cinemas where we can set a price and ticket sales are to be donated to charity," said Wu in his office at Fitness Zone Kiulap.

Wu, donning his signature Fitness Zone baseball caps, said the movie has been a big hit in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong where fans booked up to 10 movie sessions and ticket sales were all donated to Haiti.

He is looking to do something similar in Brunei as well.

"Those 10 sessions amounted to about $40,000 to $50,000 worth of donations.

Also, instead of buying flowers for me as gifts during movie premieres, they are donating the money they would use to Haiti and I heard that has come to almost $10,000," he added. For the past two weeks, Wu has been busy promoting his movies, going to one city a day for the past two weeks.

"I've been waking up at 4am to catch the earliest flights with my co-stars to different countries and it has been really tiring. I'm glad to be back in Brunei," said the 30-year-old actor.

It was Wu's first time playing a role which was rather different to what his previous characters had to offer and also, it was the first time he was involved in a big-scale production such as this.

"The image I portrayed will look different as to what I have been doing the last time. Even the fight scenes were different from my last movie ... there are many fight styles and this was more of a challenge to me," he said with enthusiasm.

On the side of filming, it was a big boost to his confidence, "I saw and learned a lot of new things which will all come in handy for me in the future."

Wu believed that his latest movie has prepared him well for other bigger-scale movies in the future.

While filming, Wu opted to use a stuntman as little as possible, which led him to getting injured on several occasions and almost losing sight in one eye.

"I wanted to do everything myself, I told the action director and to do that, we had a month-long training. About 80 per cent of the movie entails that I'm involved in fight scenes and of course my hands got bruised a lot, especially when there's a lot of hand-to-hand combat."

"In my other movie, we used weapons to fight a lot so this was different."

"At one time, I was using a bow and arrow and there was an explosive attached to the tip of the arrow. It wasn't supposed to go off early but it exploded prematurely. Fortunately, I got away safely and was just left with teary eyes," he said.

But the movie is not all about the action, Wu clarified. There are some scenes that carry strong and meaningful messages, especially the relationship between brothers or the portrayal of love, he explained.

"Our characters are secret agents for the Emperor at that time and in the storyline Donnie Yen's character was framed, and the country set out soldiers to hunt and kill him."

"When my character heard about the situation, I felt it was my chance to do something meaningful and ended up sacrificing myself to help him, which I felt was a strong moment," he shared.

The main challenge of filming the movie for Wu was the desert heat.

"It was really really hot and the desert wind was blowing hard non-stop. It was terrible during filming as the sand was constantly in my eyes."

"Not to mention it was more than 40 degrees!" he exclaimed, adding that filming took place in Yinchuan, China.

Wu said that media screenings in other countries have turned out good and responses from the critics have been positive.

Since it premiered more than a week ago, Wu said the China box office sales have been excellent, hitting 58 million yuan ($11 million) in just five days. "People are saying that "14 Blades" has been the highest grossing film so far this year and that's really promising. It won't take long before hitting 100 million yuan," he believed.

Wu credited the success of the movie to Yen, "he's really popular now and movies with him in it will surely draw the crowd". Working with his co-stars Yen and Zhao Wei, whose movies Wu had watched since he was a child, has proven to be a great learning experience for him. "I learned a lot from the veterans and it was just a perfect opportunity for me," he said.

When asked about his plans for 2010, Wu talked about how he wants to be more focussed on charity works wherever he goes.

"I'm seldom in Brunei, every time I get a four- or five-day span holiday, I'll be back here and when I am here, there is always something happening."

Later in February we'll be organising a blood donation session," said Wu.

On the show-business, Wu said that once the Chinese New Year break is over, it's back to filming. Whether a television series or a feature film, he does not know yet.

His band, Fahrenheit, will also be releasing a new album in August.

"14 Blades" has been playing in cinemas across the Sultanate since February 4.
