Wu Chun taking part in the 8km walk
The HSBC's Walk Run and Cycle charity event has collected a record of more than $100,000 as around 1,000 people participated in the event, which kicked off at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien.
The rainy weather didn't dampen the spirit of the charity drive, as people came in droves to join the event that was delayed by half an hour to ensure the safety of the participants.
Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah, YAM Pg Muda Abdul Mu' min and Pengiran Seti Aminah binti Pengiran Othman were among the participants. Also making a special appearance was Wu Chun, local born superstar who is the owner of Fitness Zone.
Mr Lim Boon Teck, Manager of Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Brunei, in an interview said, "This is the biggest amount that we have collected since we started the charity event four years ago. It is slightly over $100,000 now. I would like to thank the participants and the sponsors for all the support. One hundred per cent of what we have collected will be donated to three charitable organisations namely KACA, SMARTER and Pusat Ehsan."
He added the donation may be even more because some of the participants just handed in their donation cards this morning.
"We will have the final figure by next week and will present the donations to the three charitable organisations at a later date," he told the Bulletin.
On the turnout of the event, he said, "We just had a little problem with the weather. Around 2,200 people signed up but because of the weather, only a thousand turned up. It is, however, still very encouraging although it was raining heavily."
He added, "We really appreciate that everyone took the time to be here this morning. We also would like to convey our gratitude to the participants who had done well in raising donations for the charity."
The Manager of Corporate Sustainability of HSBC Brunei also conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to the royal guests, as well as Wu Chun who turned up despite the rain to support the charity drive.
Mr Lim also apologised to those who couldn't register on time to take part in the event because the event couldn't accommodate anymore people due to safety issues.
The participants were split into various categories: 45km that was open only for cyclists aged 18 years old and above, 8km Walk Run and Cycle event that was open to six years old and above and the 2.4km costume walk.
On hand to flag off each category was Mr Vincent Ho, the Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Brunei.
Speaking to members of the media, Mr Vincent Ho said, "Due to the rain, we were concerned about the safety of the participants, but the turnout was very impressive as I saw children, adults and senior citizens alike turning up to continue their support for this event. This is fantastic and it really says a lot about the people of Brunei and their spirit for charity."
He thanked the support of the Royal Brunei Police Force, as well as the motorists who patiently waited for the participants to cross the road.
"I am confident the event will make good use of the funds from the charity and we look forward to organising more events like this," he added.
Mr Vincent Ho who just bought a bicycle to join the charity drive said, "You can't really appreciate the relevance of the event until you are really on the ground to feel what it is like. It was really great and we also had great support from our team."
Wu Chun, who joined the 8km walk said, "I love to participate in events like this together with the public as it promotes a healthy lifestyle through exercising. I wouldn't miss it for anything. I have not taken part in such a big event since my years in Chung Hwa Middle School."
More than $15,000 worth of prizes were presented to some of the lucky participants in the lucky draw.
