SINGAPORE: There are all sorts of bosses in this world.
There's the good, the bad and then there's the Wu Chun.
The Brunei-born Taiwan actor runs his family's chain of gyms in Brunei whenever he manages to peel himself away from his busy showbiz career, and he says he is the kind of boss who "leads by example".
"I hope to be a good role model for my staff.
"I feel that if I am working for someone who isn't interested in the business and does not work hard, I would not set high work standards for myself either," said Wu.
The former Fahrenheit member was speaking at a promotional event in Singapore on Monday, for his new idol drama "Sunny Girl", in which he plays the general manager of a cosmetics conglomerate.
"When I return to Brunei, I am very busy. I dump my actor persona and do everything.
"Even if there is rubbish on the floor, I am the first person who would go over and throw it away."
"It's an attitude. I keep trying to improve my knowledge of the business and share it with my staff, to show I am serious ... so they will be too," said Wu.
He pointed out that he is a very different kind of boss from his character Di Ya Xin in "Sunny Girl".
Di is arrogant, self-centred and constantly makes life difficult for Yang Guang (played by Rainie Yang), a girl who became his maid to pay off her parents' debts.
Of course, his character, in true idol drama style, slowly falls for the lovable lass Yang Guang and begins to change his ways after getting to know her.
Near-death experience
While the drama series is filled with romantic scenarios and breathtaking backdrops, the making of "Sunny Girl" was not exactly pleasant.
Wu revealed that he almost died while shooting a scene for the drama, which involved him paragliding off a cliff before crashing into a shack.
"When you paraglide, you need to listen to instructions ... and open the fabric wing when there is wind."
"But I didn't hear the production staff say, 'Don't jump, don't jump' and I jumped off anyway."
"I just slid down the cliff. The cliff was fifty, sixty storeys high!" said Wu.
"The director said I didn't actually have to paraglide but I wanted to make it look good ... so I said, let's do it. That was the most thrilling scene I ever done in my acting career because I almost died."
In spite of that nasty incident, Wu expressed that he thoroughly enjoyed himself on the set of "Sunny Girl" as Yang had been very warm towards him, even though it was only their first collaboration together.
He said he was also overjoyed that the director and producer of "Sunny Girl" were willing to incorporate his creative suggestions, from adding lines to the script to how certain scenes are shot, into the show.
"I'm really happy the director and the production staff were willing to let me participate. It really gives me a bigger sense of achievement [working on the show]," said Wu.
"Sunny Girl" airs every Saturday, 9.30pm on Channel U.
