It's starting to look like Wu Chun can't get away from gigs that have to do with the weather. Since leaving the band Fahrenheit in June to concentrate on acting, the Taiwan-based pop idol's latest project to hit our shores is a drama titled Sunny Girl.
Also starring Rainie Yang as Sunshine, the girl of the title, the show is about how Yang's character takes up a job as a domestic helper in the large and extravagant residence belonging to Wu's character, the privileged and rude head of a cosmetics empire. The two start off on the wrong foot, which, of course, is the cue for romantic sparks to fly.
At a press conference, Wu said of Yang, "Before I met her, I assumed she'd have an attitude and that she was not that friendly. After I met her, I realised she was easy-going and very talkative. She kept criticising my Mandarin!"
To promote the show, the 31-year-old arrived in Singapore on Sunday evening and attended a meet-and-greet session at Bugis Junction, which attracted thousands of fans.
"Some fans welcomed me at the airport, and some got in line for the event really early - it must have been hard on them," the Brunei native said, describing his Singaporean fans as being "quite well-behaved, actually".
"They are mostly a little more mature. A lot of them are working adults and not little girls, so often, their feedback runs along the same lines as what I'm thinking," said Wu, who also manages his family's health club business in Brunei. "They are daring in that they aren't shy about expressing themselves. Maybe because Singapore is near Brunei, they feel that I'm culturally close to them. For me, coming here to Singapore is like returning home because I'm very familiar with the place, and it's quite similar to Brunei."
Still, the Asian heartthrob is no stranger to extreme fan reactions. "One fan gave me her passport and asked me to take her away," Wu recollected, laughing. "She said, 'Take me someplace where the two of us can live together!' I'm still not sure if she was kidding - but later I asked someone to hand the passport back to her."
Not likely, girlfriend - Wu is a family-loving homebody. Amidst the busy schedule drawn up for his visit to Singapore, Wu still found time to have supper at Newton Circus with his father, who had come from Brunei to see him.
"It wasn't that long ago that I was back home, but you know, it's never enough," said Wu with a smile. MAY SEAH
