Managing Director of Fitness Zone Wu Chun yesterday visited the Paediatric Haemato-Oncology Ward at the RIPAS Hospital, gave away hampers, took pictures and interacted with the patients.
Wu Chun was there to create public awareness on the patients who are mostly diagnosed with childhood cancer.
The visit shed some light on the disease, which is the leading cause of death in children under 18 years old.
Children are diagnosed with many different forms of cancer.
There are 12 major types of cancer that can affect the bones, muscles, blood, liver, kidney, brain, and even the eyes.
Common adult cancers for example lung, breast, colons, etc, rarely occur in children or adolescents.
Some forms of paediatric cancer have a five-year survival rate of more than 90 per cent, while others have a survival rate of less than two per cent.
The average length of treatment for childhood cancer, from initial diagnosis to cure or remission, is three years.
Brunei Darussalam's statistics show 89 children have cancer since the year 2000 and Leukemia is the most common cancer amongst them.
The largest age group of children newly diagnosed with cancer is from one to five years old.
In 2011, eight children were diagnosed with cancer.
