GYMS and other fitness and health centres have extended their usual business hours to accommodate their customers' schedules during the fasting month. While some gyms in the capital are closing late, others are aggressively slashing prices to attract new members with discounted membership rates.
In order to retain their customers, CHYMES Fitness Station has resorted to extending their hours to midnight. CHYMES Fitness Station's Elvie Padustan said, "Our opening hours are usually from 8am till 11pm, but now it's until 12 midnight."
She said her Muslim clients come in less regularly than before during the fasting period. "They come in only three times a week and usually after sungkai (breaking fast)," she said.
Another fitness and health centre in the capital has also extended hours to suit the needs of customers.
Harun's Gym manager Emie said while there are no special promotions or discount rates for gym-goers this month, gym operating hours have been extended till midnight.
"There's an increase in training this month," said the manager, speculating it could be due to other gyms being closed during the fasting season.
"We have year-round special rates for ladies though. We try to attract more ladies to the gym," she added.
Gigi Meniado, Fitness Zone manager, said these days, gym-goers only go for the light workout sessions.
"There are less people coming in to train these days," said the membership manager. Only 30% of their regular customers come in to the gym and Meniado said only about 10% are Muslim members. "It depends on when they come in, some work out before sungkai and some after," she said.
Some clients have even frozen their accounts till after Hari Raya, according to the manager.
To attract more members, Meniado told The Brunei Times that Fitness Zone is offering a promotion that would last only up to the first day of Raya.
"Actually we have a promotion for six months membership where they pay $59 for the first month only," she pointed out.
The manager said that Fitness Zone also takes a hefty 70% off the joining fee.
