Wu Chun can do it all, and more

THE skyrocketing popularity of Brunei-born actor Wu Chun (Wu Zun) sees the resurrection of metrosexuals on the silver screen.
The 28-year-old is the complete package. He has a delicate face, masculine build and a respectable family background.
But his ambition goes far beyond all of this. The former national basketball player has been a sharp-minded entrepreneur and a person not afraid to take risks.
“I would sacrifice my career if one day I found my true love,” said Wu at the premier of his first ever film, Butterfly Lovers (Jian Die), on October 9 in Beijing. “I hope to start my own family before the age of 35, and I’m willing to give up anything for my relationship.”
In the film, which is based on a traditional Chinese legend, Wu plays the role Liang Shanbo, a highly skilled martial arts expert who resides in the mountains. He gives up his life in grief over losing a lover.

Kicking it
Despite having no experience of kungfu films, Wu performed most of his own stunts in the movie, including a roof-top fight and jumping from a three-storey building.
“The only scenes that he didn’t do were the ones which involved being kicked in the face,” said director Ma Chucheng.
Wu became a household name after landing a spot in the Taiwanese pop group Fahrenheit three years ago. He has made headway since, appearing in numerous TV sitcoms in Taiwan. But before entering the entertainment industry, he had displayed an aptitude for business.
Five years ago, he opened a three-storey gymnasium named Fitness Zone in Brunei. Although his father is a business tycoon, he took out a bank loan for the project. Now he is paying back the loan with the proceeds from his own hard work. He has since opened a second gym, and hopes to turn it into a successful chain. Recently Wu won an award for the most promising young entrepreneur in Brunei.

Always saving
“I never took receiving money from home for granted,” said Wu, who started to run a coffee shop and a snooker hall at the age of 19. “Instead, I like to have savings. Since I was a teenager, I’ve learnt to put half the pocket money that my dad gave me into the bank, so I had my own budget when I went traveling. I am always careful to have some money saved for a rainy day.”
From basketball player, to gym owner, to actor and model in Taiwan, Wu has always chased his dreams. But he was not always so fearless.
When his mother died of cancer four years ago, Wu’s view of the world began to change. He decided that from that point on he would live his life as an experiment.
“She has left me a legacy such as being modest and unbiased,” said Wu. “But the most important lesson I have learned is to live every second to the fullest and have no regrets in life.”

Lovers with wings
Butterfly Lovers is based on the legendary Chinese love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. The roles are played by Wu Chun and Charlene Choi (A Sa) respectively.
Adding a twist to the movie, the story unfolds with them finding each other in a world of martial arts. Liang is ordered by his master to take care of Zhu, a girl from a wealthy family who disguises herself as a man to escape from danger.
They fall in love but Zhu’s parents force her to marry another rich man. At the end Yingtai and Shanbo die and their spirits turn into a pair of beautiful butterflies, flying together among the flowers forever, never to be apart again.
